The Evolution & Expansion

Timeshare, one of today’s fastest growing sectors of the travel and tourism industry, began in the French Alps in the 1960s. At that time, when demand for second homes was limited, French and Swiss companies started marketing the concept of buying only specific weeks of a resort condominium unit. The idea quickly spread to the United States in the early 1970s, with one flaw - customers were unwilling to buy an inflexible product that limited their vacation options, locking them into taking a vacation at the same time and at the same place year after year. Like many others at the time, condominium owners John and Christel DeHaan of Indianapolis, Indiana, wanted flexibility and options in their vacations. In 1974, the DeHaans founded RCI in the hopes of creating the ultimate plan for American consumers who also wanted the flexibility to take a vacation when and where they wanted. At the time, it was considered a radical idea to offer potential buyers of vacation accommodations the opportunity to place their ownership unit in a pool and exchange it for a comparable unit elsewhere in the world. Originally conceived for whole-ownership condominiums, the DeHaan’s idea was perfect for timeshare. In 1975, RCI affiliated its first resort and made its first vacation exchange. By the end of the year, RCI had affiliated 35 resorts, enrolled 1,000 members and confirmed 236 exchanges. In an attempt to grow the company globally, RCI began its expansion in 1976 with the establishment of the first of its international regional headquarters in Mexico City. In 1977, RCI established regional European headquarters in London (moved to Kettering, England, in 1989). Later, in 1981, RCI established a presence in Asia with the opening of a licensee office in Nagoya, Japan. Queensland, Australia became regional headquarters for RCI Asia-Pacific in 2001. RCI was acquired in 1996 by Hospitality Franchise Systems, Inc. (HFS), a major franchiser of real estate and hotel brands growing fast in the travel and leisure industry. In 1997, HFS and CUC International, Inc. merged to form Cendant Corporation, the parent company of RCI.

RCI Today

Today, RCI continues to evolve and to grow as the "marketplace for leisure". RCI is one the largest vacation exchange companies, with more than twice the number of members, more than twice the number of resort affiliates, and more than twice the number of exchanges of any other company. The company currently has over 3,700 affiliated resorts located in 100 countries, with 2.8 million members living in more than 200 countries. Since its inception, RCI has arranged exchange vacations for more than 54 million people worldwide. Among RCI’s prestigious resort developer customers are Hilton Grand Vacation Club, Shell Vacation Club, Club IntraWest and Fairfield Resorts. RCI’s exchange systems offer consumers with an ownership stake in their vacation accommodations the chance to exchange for more quality resort destinations and leisure product choices in more countries than any other service. RCI’s market intelligence unit - Ragatz Associates - is also the leading provider of market research to the timeshare industry. The first published research study on the timeshare industry was produced in 1978 with the release of Dr. Richard Ragatz’s report, "U.S. Resort Timeshare Purchasers: Who They Are, Why They Buy". Today, Ragatz is the executive vice president of Ragatz Associates.

RCI Exchange

RCI’s core business service, called RCI Weeks, allows members to exchange their vacation accommodations at one timeshare resort for comparable accommodations at another. RCI Weeks is the world’s largest timeshare exchange network, with a growing base of satisfied customers enjoying flexibility in their vacation experiences. In late 2000, RCI launched RCI Points, the world’s first global points-based exchange system. RCI Points allows members to have their timeshare ownership interest converted into a quantity of points (determined by the size of the unit, location, season, resort demand, etc.), which can be exchanged for other timeshare accommodations, as well as for airfare, rental cars, hotel stays, golf outings, cruises and European country cottages. RCI Points is the most flexible exchange system in the world, and is bringing more travel and leisure options to the timeshare owner. RCI’s mission is to be the market maker for global travel and leisure, providing outstanding service to our resort developers and members, with a commitment to quality, innovation and leadership.
